Indeed recently published their Employer Outlook 2018 and it’s full of expert predictions on employer challenges and strategies for the upcoming year. In short, the competition for top talent will be heating up, emerging technologies are transforming the workplace, and there is high demand on new, niche skills. To save you some time, we skimmed the report for key highlights and here are our top 4 insights for the Hiring Outlook in 2018:

  1. Expect more hiring.
    Think the hiring landscape is competitive now? Just wait for 2018. Indeed reports that 61% of employers expect to hire more people in 2018 than in 2017. Whether it’s supporting business growth, hiring for a certain skill or replacing lost staff – get ready for a hiring boom.

  1. Industries making the biggest recruiting moves.
    With the U.S.’s current unemployment rate being at 4.1%, its lowest level since 2000, hiring trends are showing no signs of slowing down. However, some industries plan on being more aggressive than others when it comes to hiring in 2018. The most active sectors for recruiting are architecture and engineering where 82% plan to hire, IT and telecom companies (75%) and professional services firms (71%).

  1. Trouble hiring at the entry-level.
    Indeed’s report shows that 41% of companies say their entry-level positions are the hardest to fill. Why are entry-level hires difficult? It may come down to incentives. With higher level positions, hiring managers usually have more flexibility to entice candidates with higher salaries and stronger incentives – like PTO or telecommuting. With entry-level employees, there isn’t as much wiggle room. One way to help get more qualified candidates applying to your entry-level jobs is to clean up your job descriptions. Are you really looking for someone entry-level with little-to-no experience? Or, are you looking for someone with one or two years of experience with core competencies and required skills? The job description should accurately describe the experience level you are hoping to attract. Being transparent about the position responsibilities and requirements will lead to more qualified applicants.

  1. The hunt for top talent.
    Your team is looking to hire an experienced iOS Developer but your website’s job posting has received very few qualified applicants. How do you find more qualified developers? Start by looking at your existing team. Do they know anyone in their networks that would make a great fit? Indeed’s report shows that employee referrals are the most common source of new hires. A close second? Job sites. Post your open position on sites like Indeed, LinkedIn, Monster, and Dice to attract a larger candidate pool.
