We recently caught up with Shawn Plowman, Managing Director of our Phoenix office, and conducted a short Q&A to hear about his experience at Xtreme Consulting. Shawn has been with Xtreme for over two years and manages all aspects of our Phoenix office including the sales, recruiting, and operations teams.
What is your favorite part of your job?
I truly enjoy being in the people business and literally helping customers and candidates change their lives for the better. On the customer side, I love helping them solve business problems they are having related to talent and seeing their company have more success because of it. I love helping candidates improve their career whether through increased compensation, a shorter commute time so they can spend more time with family, or helping them get out of a job that they have lost passion for.
What is the best piece of career advice you have ever received?
The best career advice I have ever received is to “Show, don’t tell.” In other words, don’t spend time telling people what to do…..spend time doing your job well and showing your skills. Others will follow.
How would you describe Xtreme’s company culture?
I would describe the culture as a culture where you are allowed and expected to own your work. The culture allows for flexibility and the opportunity to be compensated fairly for your work. It is also a culture of integrity and making sure the customer is getting the best possible service.
What do you think makes the Phoenix business community unique?
The Phoenix business community is really a melting pot of industries. Obviously, it has been dominated by tourism because of abundant sunshine…but, in the past five years or so the technology industry has become an important part of the economy. The business community has in the past been known as a back office or support type community but we are now seeing R&D and start up type technology companies moving in. This has led to a lot of infrastructure development to support these companies and the people that come with them.
Alright, we have to ask some grab bag questions now. What was your dream job back in elementary school?
I always wanted to play in the NFL!
What is one movie you can recite every line from?
Fletch… a Chevy Chase classic!
If you could have dinner with any celebrity, who would it be and why?
I would love to have dinner with Vin Scully, the LA Dodgers announcer. I grew up listening to him in LA and would love to hear his 65 years of stories!
