What are Flexible Work Arrangements? Arrangements that allow employees to have a more variable schedule as opposed to complying with the standard 8-hour workday.


Most Common Types of Flexible Work Arrangements:

  • Flextime: employees set their own starting and quitting times within limits predetermined by management.
    • Ex: The Palo Alto-based company VMware lets each employee set his or her own hours. Night owls love being able to work later, while early birds are happy to start their day at sunrise.
  • Job-sharing: lets two people share the responsibilities of one full-time position.
    • Ex: Computer company Dell offers many forms of flexible work arrangements and encourages employees to take advantage of their job-share program when needing to balance their job with their personal lives.
  • Compressed workweek arrangements: let employees work 40 hours in fewer than five days.
    • Ex: Project management software provider Basecamp gives employees who have been at the company for at least a year the option to work a four-day workweek from May through October.
  • Telecommuting employees: work from home during some or all of their scheduled hours.
    • Networking hardware company Cisco uses its own products for telecommuting, and the average Cisco employee telecommutes 2.0 days per week.



Why are Flexible Work Arrangements Increasing in Popularity?

  • According to new research from the Indeed Hiring Lab, job searches that include the terms "remote", "telecommute" and "work from home"  in the US are up 32% since last July.
  • In a recent FlexJobs survey, when asked what the “most important” factors in a potential job are, 84% of working parents named work flexibility, followed by work-life balance (80%).
  • Flexible Work Arrangements can benefit the employer, as well. Allowing employees to work remotely can save costs on office leases, utilities, office supplies, food and beverages, transportation subsidies, and more.

 

Tips for Adopting Flexible Work Arrangements at your Company:

Hire Smart.
During the hiring process, you want to look for candidates who are: self-motivated, have strong communication skills, attention to detail, and enthusiasm for their work/for your company. Major plus if they have previous work-at-home experience.

Leverage Technology.
Implement video conferencing, group chat rooms, and document sharing platforms to keep remote workers looped in.

Don't Be a Stranger.
100% remote, 100% of the time will lead to employee isolation. Employ processes to maintain good communication between team members, including weekly update meetings and regular in-person one-on-ones with managers.
