We recently had one of our very own Xtreme members, Claudia Knauer, from our Portland office take some time out of her schedule to give back to the community earlier this month. Claudia visited iUrbanTeen, a STEM and Arts education program that brings together underrepresented teens and young adults for career exploration and mentoring. At Xtreme, we hold our communities close to our core and continually make it a point to get involved. We asked Claudia to provide some detail on her time with iUrbanTeen and here is how she described her experience:
“iUrbanTeen is one of my very favorite organizations to volunteer with. Most of the students have absolutely no clue what opportunities in IT and Engineering can provide for them. iUrban was started by my dear friend, Deena Pierott, to help introduce careers in IT and Engineering to underprivileged and underrepresented middle and high school students. The agenda for the day included workshops on Robotics – where students were able to program their own Robot, Digital Media – where the students were able to use iPads to make movies, and Cybersecurity – how safe is YOUR password? We could find out! The students also learned about what it is like to be a Project Manager on a Healthcare related project, in regards to resources and cost. Lunch was provided, as were prizes, and giveaways from corporate sponsors.
I love these events – they’re full of enthusiasm, excitement and fun!
A seed is planted in hope that we can impress upon these beautiful children the opportunities that abound within the IT and Engineering fields where they can change the world and iUrban is a topical, heartfelt, and professional organization that is helping pave the way.
I joined Xtreme very recently. I specifically chose Xtreme Consulting Group and am thrilled that they in turn chose me! Not only because of their impressive reputation in the consulting industry, but because of their commitment to helping a variety of organizations as evidenced by their XtremeCares Volunteer Program. I have been involved in a range of Portland-based organizations for decades including iUrban Teen Tech, PDX Women in Technology as a Mentor, The Portland Kitchen Summer Intern selection program, the Children’s Cancer Association as a MusicRX volunteer, Cerimon House and dozens of music related benefits where I’ve sung at Retirement & Nursing Homes, for the Cat Adoption Group, Relay for Life, etc. Being a part of team Xtreme fully aligns with my passion and ongoing commitment to being involved in community!”
We are so grateful to have members of Xtreme extending their time and resources to such a great cause. If you would like to get involved at iUrbanTeen feel free to visit their website or donate to help iUrbanTeen build and provide children with the necessary STEM and Art skills for their futures.
